  • Spain's MITECO has invited EOIs to promote sustainable energy on its islands with the help of renewable energy, storage and their integration with the local grid
  • This is part of the government's plans to reactivating economy that has suffered the impacts of COVID-19
  • Interested stakeholders need to suggest financing mechanisms to execute the suggested program

The Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) in Spain has invited expressions of interest (EOI) to figure out ways to promote sustainable energy on its islands.

Under the EOI issued, interested stakeholders can suggest measures to deploy renewable energy and its integration into the islands' electricity grid including innovative business models that offer turnkey projects, sectoral decarbonization through the integration of renewable energies, and promoting economic support the transformation of the economic model. Promoting energy storage deployment is also part of the plan.

The EOI would also expect suggestions on construction and development of strategic action lines, corresponding financing/support mechanisms along with process to execute the program through competitive process.

It is part of the country's plan to reactivate the economy from COVID-19 impacts under the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR) being promoted by the Spanish government. The PRTR has a specific line of action focused on sustainable energy is island territories.

EOIs will be accepted till February 26, 2021. Details are available on MITECO's website.

In November 2020, MITECO approved €12 million for IDEA to support solar PV, wind, biogas and biomass projects in Galicia to be selected through competitive bidding (see €12 Million For Innovative RE Projects In Galicia, Spain).

The ministry shared its 5-year renewable energy auction plan late in 2020 to raise the renewable energy share in the country's electricity mix to 100% by 2050. Results of the 1st auction under the plan should be out soon as it was held on January 26, 2021 (see Spain To Launch RE Auction On Jan. 26, 2021).
