Sweden’s Cumulative Installed PV Till 2022-End: 2.6 GW

Swedish Solar Energy Association Svensk Solenergi Counts Country To Have Deployed Nearly 1 GW New Solar PV Capacity In 2022

  • Sweden deployed as much as 1 GW of new solar PV capacity in 2022, according to Svensk Solenergi
  • With 50,800 facilities coming online in 2022, it added up to cumulative capacity reaching 2.6 GW till the end of last year
  • There is already a long queue of requests for installations since there was 162% annual jump in grid connection applications in 2022

In 2022, Sweden brought online close to 1 GW of new solar PV capacity, according to the country's local solar energy association Svensk Solenergi, which takes its cumulative installed capacity till the end of December 2022 to 2.6 GW.

Annual additions in 2022 from 50,800 facilities connected were almost 100% jump from 503.4 MW added in 2021 when the cumulative reached 1.6 GW. In 2020, annual installations grew by 391 MW with 21, 875 new facilities (see Sweden Installed 500 MW Solar In 2021).

In Q4/2022 alone, it counts 16,000 new plants to have been connected preceded by 13,700 in the previous quarter. Growing interest in solar led to 162% annual increase in requests for grid connection with 94,700 applications in 2022 compared to 36,200 in 2021, as per the association that bases its statistics from official numbers from 3 major Swedish grid companies. Official statistics will be released at the end of March 2023.

It added, "For the whole year, the number of pre-registrations was 86% more than the number of network connections. The corresponding figure for 2021 was 38%. This shows what a long queue of requests for installations has built up during the year and there are still long queues to get an installation carried out."

According to the SolarPower Europe's EU Market Outlook for Solar Power 2022-2026 released in December 2022, Sweden exited 2022 with 1.1 GW new PV capacity as the market grows with tax incentives and grants. Analysts believe the Sweden's PV sector will continue to be led by the residential sector over the coming years while utility scale market grows. It estimates the country's cumulative installed solar PV capacity to grow to 10.5 GW by 2026 under medium scenario with the addition of 7.8 GW between 2023 and 2026 (see European Union To Exit 2022 With Over 41 GW Solar Installed).
