A 200 kW floating solar power plant has been energized in Tunisia by the country's electricity and gas company STEG, earning the distinction of being the 1st such PV facility to have become operational in all of Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
According to local media reports, the project has come online in the national capital Tunis by French independent power producer Qair International in partnership with STEG, as announced by the duo back in July 2020 (see 200 kW Floating Solar Project In Tunisia).
The 200 kW facility is designed to generate around 265 MWh annually, catering to covering part of electricity requirements of denizens in some 130 homes in La Goulette. It cost an investment worth €500,000 and is financed by the country's General Directorate of the Treasury, as well as by the French government.
Earlier STEG – short for Société Tunisienne de l'Electricité et du Gaz – and Qair had identified Lake Tunis in Berges du Lac district as the location of the project.
