  • UAE plans to invest in developing 60 GW worth of renewable energy capacity in India

  • It has picked Rajasthan to locate solar, wind and hybrid energy projects as part of the plan

  • The UAE will appoint an appropriate developer to implement this project in Western Rajasthan

The UAE’s Ministry of Investment plans to explore the development of a renewable energy project in India’s desert state of Rajasthan with a total estimated installed capacity of 60 GW under an investment memorandum with the state government signed ahead of the Rising Rajasthan investor summit.

This will entail the construction of solar, wind and hybrid energy projects as part of the UAE’s wider investment cooperation with the Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).

While the official statement does not specify the details, the UAE ministry said it will appoint an appropriate developer to implement this ‘landmark initiative’ in close collaboration with relevant Indian authorities.

The preferred location of the project will be somewhere in Western Rajasthan which spans the districts of Jaisalmer, Barmer, and Jodhpur, among others.

“The UAE remains at the forefront of an ambitious diversification agenda, with energy transition as a key pillar. This project highlights our unwavering commitment to advancing clean energy solutions. Rajasthan, with its favourable climate and vast landmass, offers the ideal environment for this initiative, serving as a testing ground for innovative technologies that will shape the future of energy,” said UAE’s Investment Minister Mohamed Hassan Alsuwaidi.

Rajasthan is India’s leading state in terms of renewable energy installed capacity of 30 GW, including 24 GW solar, thanks to its abundant sunlight and vast stretches of desert land (see India’s Total Renewable Energy Capacity Exceeds 200 GW Milestone). By 2030, it targets to expand its renewable energy capacity to grow to 90 GW, including 65 GW of solar capacity (see India’s Desert State Aims For 65 GW Solar Energy).

Before its Rising Rajasthan investor summit in December 2024, the Indian state has already signed several renewable energy agreements worth trillions in investor meets, including NTPC Green Energy Limited developing 25 GW of renewable energy capacity (see Rajasthan Attracting Trillions In Renewable Energy Investments).
