  • Togo has launched a new tender under the Scaling Solar initiative seeking bids for 60 MW to 80 MW solar power capacity
  • It will be set up by the winners in the form of two projects near Awandjélo and near Sokodé
  • Those companies that are selected in the pre-qualification round launched by AT2ER of Togo will be moved to the RFP round
  • Same company can also be awarded both the projects provided it offers the best price

Shortly before the world went on Christmas and New Year holidays in 2019, Togo launched its first tender under the World Bank's Scaling Solar Program for a total installed capacity of 60 MW to 80 MW (AC). The Agence Togolaise d'Electrification Rurale et des Energies Renouvelables or Togolese Agency for Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy (AT2ER) issued a request for pre-qualification (RFQ) for the solarcapacity.

This capacity will be set up in the form of two grid connected solar PV projects to be built by independent power producers (IPP) near Awandjélo in the Kara region and near Sokodé in the Central region. Job description is for design, financing, construction and operation of the two projects.

The same company can be awarded both the projects if it offers the best price, as per the RFQ documents.

Interested companies need to register with AT2ER to be able to purchase RFQ documents which then need to be submitted by March 30, 2020. Details of the tender can be viewed on the Scaling Solar website (in French language).

Those qualifying in this round will move to the request for proposals (RFP) round.

In July 2019, Togo formally joined the Scaling Solar program and added its name to the list of nations keen to develop solar power capacity with an aim to become energy independent and to diversify their electricity generation sources with the help of the World Bank's International Finance Corporation (IFC). Back then, it was announced that the African nation wants to develop 90 MW of solar power capacity under this program (see Togo Joins World Bank's Scaling Solar Program).

The country currently has 205 MW of total installed power generation capacity with only 29% of its population having access to electricity.

In November 2019, another African nation Côte d'Ivoire joined the Scaling Solar program to install 60 MW of grid connected PV capacity (see Côte d'Ivoire Joins World Bank's Scaling Solar Program).
