At the recently concluded SNEC PV+ 17th (2024) International Photovoltaic Power Generation and Smart Energy Conference & Exhibition in Shanghai, TaiyangNews Managing Director Michael Schmela had an insightful interaction with Tony Zhu, Vice President of JA Solar, as part of the TaiyangNews & SNEC 2024 – Solar Leadership Conversations.

Heading one of the leading companies in the solar PV manufacturing industry, Zhu provided an in-depth analysis of the current market dynamics and JA Solar's strategies for navigating the industry's cyclical nature. He acknowledged the challenges posed by overcapacity and low prices in the market but expressed confidence in the long-term growth and potential of the solar industry.

"JA Solar has been in the solar cycle for almost 20 years. We understand the nature of the business and have always prepared for transitions and changes," Zhu stated. Highlighting the company's focus on technology, Zhu discussed its advancements in TOPCon technology and preparations for future innovations. This commitment to staying at the cutting edge is a key strategy for enduring industry cycles and emerging stronger.

Zhu also emphasized JA Solar's global reach, with operations in 165 countries, ensuring resilience by not relying on any specific region. "Globalization has always been a priority. We have set up factories, offices, and subsidiaries worldwide," he noted, underscoring the importance of strategic partnerships and a strong corporate culture.

Discussing the company's latest product, the DeepBlue 4.0 Pro series, Zhu mentioned its wide acceptance in the market, catering to applications from rooftops to C&I and utility-scale projects. "Last year, we shipped around 5 to 10 GW of the DeepBlue 4.0, which has become a mainstream design for clients," he explained.

Zhu highlighted a new 2-product set showcased at SNEC 2024. The first product, with a more uniform appearance, is designed for rooftop projects and C&I applications, targeting developed countries with strong aesthetic demands. The second is a water stain-proof product, offering self-maintenance and higher efficiency post-installation.

Addressing the trend towards globalization amidst geopolitical shifts, Zhu revealed JA Solar's initiatives to establish manufacturing facilities outside China, including in the US, Europe, and the Middle East. "We are setting up factories in the US as a first step and exploring other regions to meet local requirements and regulations," Zhu said.

In response to increasing ESG and sustainability criteria from corporate clients, Zhu outlined JA Solar's G2G (Green to Green) strategy, focusing on green energy adoption, growth alongside clients, and achieving carbon neutrality. "We encourage using more green energy in our manufacturing sites and urge our clients and supply chain to adopt green practices," he elaborated.
