Perovskite Tandem Solar Technology Status & Outlook – Assessing Commercialization Roadmaps

Team TaiyangNews

As state-of-the-art single-junction silicon technologies will soon be hitting their practical performance ceiling in production settings, the industry is increasingly exploring next-generation architectures for further efficiency gains. Among these, tandem solar cells – particularly silicon-perovskite tandems – have emerged as the most promising pathway. By combining complementary absorber materials, tandem structures allow a broader portion of the solar spectrum to be utilized, breaking the barriers of single-junction devices.

Although the technology is still at a relatively early stage of commercialization, interest across the PV ecosystem is gigantic. These include major research institutes, equipment suppliers, and material providers. A few PV manufacturers have already established pilot production lines, and early prototypes are currently undergoing testing and evaluation.

At the same time, significant challenges remain before tandem technologies can reach large-scale commercialization. Issues related to stability, manufacturability, materials integration, and long-term reliability continue to be areas of active research and engineering development.

The first edition of the TaiyangNews Virtual Conference on Next-Generation PV Technology 2026 aims to bring together key stakeholders working on silicon-perovskite tandem technologies. The conference will explore recent technological progress, discuss the major roadblocks towards mass production, and examine potential pathways toward successful commercialization.
