  • Becquerel Prize committee selects Dr Pierre Verlinden for Becquerel Prize for Outstanding Merits in Photovoltaics for the year 2019
  • He has been selected for his 40-year work on high-efficiency solar cells, modules and systems, their feasibility for mass production and training young scientists and manufacturing engineers
  • He will receive the award on September 9, 2019 at the opening of European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference in Marseille

Established by the European Commission in 1989 to mark the 150th anniversary of the  photovoltaic effect's discovery in 1839 by Alexandre-Edmond Becquerel, the recipient of the 2019 Becquerel Prize for Outstanding Merits in Photovoltaics has been selected – Dr Pierre Verlinden, currently visiting professor at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, China, a Consultant and Non-Executive Director to PV companies. From 2012 to 2018, he worked as VP and Chief Scientist at Trina Solar.

He will receive the award on September 9, 2019 at the opening of the European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference (EU PVSEC) in Marseille, France.

Dr Verlinden has been selected for his work in design of high-efficiency solar cells, modules and systems including back contact and rear side passivated silicon solar cells.

He has also been working for feasible implementation of advanced solar cell structures for industrial mass production. Over the past 40 years, Verlinden has been actively reaching out to the global photovoltaic community while serving on numerous scientific boards, including Oxford PV from UK and BT Imaging from Australia, and also training young scientists and manufacturing engineers in the field of solar PV.
