Story so far

Switzerland based Meyer Burger has been known as a leading solar PV equipment manufacturer with a global footprint, most lately on high-efficiency HJT tools, which they sold to REC and ENEL, for example. In a strategic move the company decided to keep its technology advantage for itself and venture into solar cell and module production aiming to start with 400 MW capacity each for the 2 components. It will manufacture HJT production equipment only for self-use, while still offering testing equipment to other cell and module producers.

Meyer Burger has zeroed in on Germany to locate its manufacturing unit taking over the former Sovello site for highly efficient heterojunction solar cells and the former SolarWorld fab for its SmartWire solar module production. Production commencement at both the sites was said to be targeted for H1/2021 and it will be done under Meyer Burger (Industries) GmbH (see Meyer Burger Selects German Locations For PV Production).

Providing an update to the same, Meyer Burger said development at the production facilities is on track, and that manufacturing operations are scheduled to commence in Q2/2021. Sales of high efficiency modules will initially start from DACH region which comprises Austria, Germany and Switzerland. The Swiss company said it has already hired first sales staff with expertise in the premium segment for Borgmann's future team in relevant European markets.
