Partnering with IUCN for Biodiversity Empowerment Training: Crafting a New Collaborative Blueprint for Photovoltaics and Ecology

Xi'an- Representatives from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), including Deputy Director General Mr. Stewart Maginnis, Senior Climate Change and Energy Transition Project Officer Ms. Rachel Asante-Owusu, and Ms. Liu Qiulin, visited the global leading solar technology company LONGi’s headquarters in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province.

The official visit also marked a biodiversity empowerment training session for the entire LONGi Group. Attendees included LONGi’s Vice President Mr. Li Wenxue and senior representatives such as Mr. Li Fangsheng, Head of the Environmental Safety Management Department.

The discussions focused on pathways to sustainably integrate the photovoltaic (PV) industry with biodiversity conservation, practical implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework within the renewable energy sector, and a deeper alignment of the consensus established during COP29 when IUCN and LONGi jointly released the initiative on “Promoting Climate Action through Photovoltaics to Support Biodiversity Conservation.”

During the meeting, Mr. Li Wenxue extended a warm welcome to the IUCN delegation and provided a comprehensive presentation of LONGi's commitment to using photovoltaic technology to support biodiversity conservation. He emphasized that as a pioneer in the PV industry, LONGi holds a responsibility to deliver clean energy to the world and expressed eagerness for more exchanges and collaboration with IUCN. 

IUCN experts introduced foundational concepts and global trends related to biodiversity, biodiversity impact assessment and management tools, and pathways and case studies on corporate integration of biodiversity considerations into decision-making.

Additionally, LONGi’s Environmental Safety Management Department shared its actions and strategies for sustainability and biodiversity protection, highlighting its practical efforts to implement "hierarchical mitigation measures" as outlined in LONGi's Biodiversity Policy. 

The IUCN delegation highly acknolwdged LONGi’s achievements in sustainability, particularly its efforts in biodiversity, recognizing its initiatives as setting a benchmark for biodiversity management within the PV sector. 

At the end of the session, Mr. Li Fangsheng addressed that LONGi regards this collaboration as an opportunity to take biodiversity efforts in the future. Going forward, the company’s Environmental Safety Management Department will join hands with departments such as Finance, Supply Chain, the President’s Office, and Risk Management to continue advancing biodiversity initiatives.

By leveraging its core competency in technological innovation and engaging with stakeholders, LONGi aims to transform the advantages of photovoltaic technology into meaningful ecological benefits.
