China’s PV manufacturer Tongwei has officially launched a new collaboration with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) focused on Arctic protection and renewable energy development.

When Clean Energy Meets Melting Ice: Tongwei and WWF Launch Cooperation on Arctic Protection and Renewable Energy Development

The ceremony was joined by representatives from both organizations and international partners, including Liu Shuqi, Chairwoman & CEO of Tongwei; Winnie Lu, CEO of WWF China; Jerry Stokes, Senior Advisor of Global Solar Council; Feng Chang, Chief Administration Officer of Tongwei; Allen Xue, Vice President of Sales & Marketing of Tongwei; and Dr. Zhu Zihan, Chief Sustainability Officer of Tongwei.

With this collaboration, Tongwei becomes the first solar company in China to join WWF’s Arctic programme, committing to long-term cooperation on climate action, biodiversity preservation, and sustainable energy transition. The initiative aims to explore how corporate sustainability efforts can align with ecological conservation in one of the world’s most fragile environments.

The Arctic is currently experiencing rapid warming—up to three to four times faster than the global average. Sea ice is shrinking, biodiversity is under pressure, and global climate patterns are being reshaped. Against this backdrop, the partnership between Tongwei and WWF seeks to support long-term ecological resilience through both scientific and community-based approaches.

The cooperation will include initiatives such as sea ice monitoring in key habitat corridors, tools to support human–wildlife coexistence in coastal communities, and data-driven solutions for environmental decision-making. These efforts aim to contribute to a more adaptive and inclusive conservation model that responds to the realities of a changing Arctic.

As one of China’s leading integrated solar companies, Tongwei has long invested in combining solar innovation with environmental responsibility. In recent years, the company has supported solar donation projects across high-altitude ecological zones in western China, including the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, helping deliver electricity to conservation stations and remote research outposts. The collaboration with WWF extends these efforts into the international arena, highlighting the role of industry in supporting global climate and biodiversity goals.

This initiative underscores a growing movement toward cross-sector collaboration in addressing complex environmental challenges. Tongwei and WWF aim to turn scientific research into practical conservation action through a phased, long-term partnership. By sharing progress transparently and encouraging broader participation, the collaboration hopes to build a replicable model for how industry and NGOs can work together to strengthen climate and biodiversity resilience.
