  • CEA-INES, EGP and 3Sun have announced a 'new record' tandem solar cell efficiency of 27.1%
  • They managed to achieve this over 2-terminal perovskite-silicon tandem configuration over 9 cm²
  • The team has improved the cell efficiency from 26.5% last reported in March 2023

The National Solar Energy Institute (INES) at the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) and Italian solar company Enel Green Power (EGP) with its manufacturing arm 3Sun have announced a 'new record' perovskite-silicon tandem solar cell conversion efficiency of 27.1%.

They managed this efficiency level on over 9 cm² 2-terminal tandem cell with shading correction. It has a Voc above 1900 mV.

It is an improvement over 24.9% efficiency the team reported in April 2022, increasing it to 25.8% in December 2022, 26.5% in March 2023 for the same PIN architecture cell (see 26.5% Efficiency For Tandem Perovskite-Silicon Cell).

While the research partners do not reveal any details of the new efficiency achieved, they said the teams are looking forward to present further exciting results. "The race for PIN-architecture Si/PK tandem cells with efficiencies over 30% on large surfaces is in full gear," the added.

Perovskite-silicon tandem technology, as a next generation power generation source, is another area of interest for EGP's 3Sun that's already operating a 200 MW heterojunction solar module manufacturing facility in Catania, Italy that's to be expanded to 3 GW annually from September 2023 (see Enel Green Power Unveils Heterojunction Solar Module).

End of 2022, German research center Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin (HZB)  announced a new world record power conversion efficiency of 32.5% for perovskite-silicon tandem solar cell, officially confirmed by the European Solar Test Installation (ESTI) and on the charts of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory  (see HZB Reports 32.5% Efficiency For Tandem Solar Cells).
