STABL Energy, a power electronics developer for battery storage systems, has won the EES 2022 (Electrical Energy Storage) award for its SI 100 modular multi-level converter for battery storage systems. The system is used in place of traditional battery inverters.
The conventional method of chopping off the DC voltage of the storage system via separate inverters is no longer necessary in order to generate the AC voltage for the grid connection. Instead, the STABL inverter generates AC voltage by switching battery modules on and off in a dynamic sequence to incrementally raise and decrease output voltage in a staircase pattern, guaranteeing that all battery modules are charged and drained equally. The conversion efficiency is better than that of ordinary battery inverters with lower switching voltages and frequencies, reaching a maximum of 99.4%, it said.
The approach allows for the integration of battery modules in various states, which is beneficial for second-life applications. The EES 2022 jury said it was impressed with this inventive technology's excellent conversion efficiency, ability to employ different battery modules within one system, and overall lighthouse character.
