Key takeaways:

  • The Electricity Authority of Cyprus installed 4.9 MW rooftop PV across 405 schools

  • The project, supported by the Ministry of Education, aimed to raise awareness on renewable energy among the younger generation

  • The rooftop PV systems reduced the schools’ energy consumption by about 30%

The Electricity Authority of Cyprus was named a finalist in the Outstanding Projects category of The smarter E AWARD 2025 for its large-scale school rooftop solar initiative. As part of a national effort supported by the Ministry of Education, solar PV systems were installed on 405 school rooftops across Cyprus, totaling 4.9 MW in capacity. System sizes were tailored to the energy needs and roof areas of each school.

Beyond electricity generation, the installations provided thermal insulation to school buildings, covering a combined roof area of 83,500 m². According to the project data, the systems reduced electricity consumption by approximately 30%.

The initiative also aimed to promote renewable energy awareness among students, integrating energy-saving practices into the educational environment.
