Brazil’s 1st-ever battery storage auction has been announced as part of the 2026 Reserve Capacity Auction (LRCAP)
Eligible systems must exceed 30 MW capacity, run over 4 hours daily, recharge within 6 hours, and reach >85% efficiency
The Ministry of Mines and Energy sees storage as essential for system stability, affordability, and energy transition progress
Brazil’s Ministry of Mines and Energy has launched a public consultation for the country’s maiden battery storage auction as part of the 2026 Reserve Capacity Auction (LRCAP) – Storage.
According to the draft released by the ministry, only systems with a capacity of over 30 MW and a daily power availability of over 4 hours will be accepted in the competition. These systems should be able to fully recharge within 6 hours, and their round-trip efficiency should be more than 85%.
The LRCAP auction will allow companies to install and operate large-scale battery systems to store and release electricity on demand.
The government views battery storage as a key part of modernizing the country’s energy sector, helping to ensure security and stability. With major cost reductions, batteries have become a promising solution for many uses, explains the ministry, such as supplying power during peak hours and supporting generation sources like thermal power plants.
“Energy storage is viable and a great ally in the energy transition. It is the way to reduce losses, stabilize the system and maintain affordable tariffs, boosting the sector with innovation and predictability,” stated Brazil’s Mines and Energy Minister, Alexandre Silveira.
Launched on November 7, 2025, the consultation will be open for feedback till December 1, 2025. Details of this public consultation No. 202 of 10/11/2025 are available on the ministry’s public consultation website.
