  • CEMIG has opened a call soliciting bids for power supply from wind and solar power plants in Brazil
  • Projects selected under the call need to start electricity supply from January 1, 2025 under 10 or 15 year PPAs
  • It plans to add around 1 GW of additional power generation capacity over the next 4 years, especially from wind and solar projects

Brazilian electricity supplier Companhia Energetica de Minas Gerais (CEMIG) is soliciting proposals to acquire or contract electricity from wind and solar power plants in the country, a step that it says is aligned with its strategic business planning.

Eligible projects and undertakings must have a total installed capacity of a minimum of 50 MW and should be in possession of a grant by national electricity market regulator Aneel or should have applied for the same till February 28, 2022.

Selected projects need to start supplying power from January 1, 2025. Power purchase agreements (PPA) can be entered for 10 or 15 years.

Companies interested in participating in the tender can register with CEMIG latest by June 14, 2022. Further details can be viewed on the utility's website.

According to CEMIG, in 2021 it held 2 auctions to procure incentivized energy from greenfield projects and received close to 10 GW of installed capacity in registered projects. Over the next 4 years it aims to shell out BRL 5 billion to grow its power generation capacity by about 1 GW, especially from wind and solar facilities.

"Cemig is always studying and evaluating situations to ensure the company's leadership in the free energy market, also acting very intensively in the purchase of energy from other agents, expanding its portfolio of purchase contracts," said the company's Superintendent of Wholesale Energy Purchase and Sale, Marcos Aurelio Alvarenga Pimentel Jr.

Recently, the utility announced it will acquire 49% stake in special purposes companies operating 6 solar energy projects in Lavras, Minas Gerais with a total capacity of 18.5 MW.
