  • EWEC has launched an EOI round for its 5th utility-scale solar PV project in Abu Dhabi

  • The Zarraf Solar PV Project in the Al Zarraf area will have a 1.5 GW AC installed capacity

  • It will be developed as an IPP project with the winners entering a PPA with the EWEC

The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has announced a new utility-scale solar power project with 1.5 GW AC capacity, to be located in the Al Zarraf area’s Al Dhafra region in Abu Dhabi.

A greenfield development, the Zarraf Solar PV Project is targeted to generate enough clean electricity for close to 160,000 homes across the UAE. The scope of work involves development, financing, construction, operation and maintenance, and ownership of the solar PV plant and associated infrastructure.

On October 1, 2024, the agency opened an expression of interest (EOI) round for this independent power producer (IPP) project. Submissions can be emailed till October 22, 2024 to zarrafpv.project@ewec.ae. Details are available on EWEC’s website

It will be followed by a request for qualification (RFQ) round, and thereafter the request for proposals (RFS) for qualified bidders. Winners will enter into a power purchase agreement with EWEC.

For EWEC, it is the agency’s 5th utility-scale solar PV project. It will be similar in scale and production capacity to the 2 GW Al Dhafra Solar PV project that came online in November 2023, the 1.5 GW Al Ajban Solar PV project that recently achieved financial close, and the Al Khazna Solar PV project.

In April this year, it invited proposals for the 1.5 GW Al Khazna PV Project (see EWEC Launches Request For Proposal Round For 1.5 GW PV).

“The Zarraf Solar PV project is a key component of EWEC’s world-leading deployment of solar power generation, as we strategically accelerate the UAE’s energy transition. We are proud to be leading the transformation of the energy ecosystem by commissioning and deploying new low-carbon technologies. We look forward to receiving expressions of interest for the development of the Zarraf Solar PV project, and welcome those willing to join us on our journey to decarbonise the energy sector,” said Othman Al Ali, Chief Executive Officer of EWEC.

EWEC also sells clean energy certificates from multiple renewable and clean energy sources to enable Abu Dhabi-based entities to decarbonize their energy consumption and reduce their Scope 2 emissions. At present, it sells CECs for wind energy projects.
