Country’s Largest Electric Utility Invites Bids For 30 MW AC Floating Solar Power Plant

  • The tender, with December 8 as the last date for bid submissions, is open to both domestic and international contractors 

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), the largest Malaysian electric utility, has invited bids from EPC companies for the deployment of a 30 MW AC floating solar PV project at Chenderoh Reservoir. 

This competitive bidding round is open to both local and international contractors with relevant experience, financial capabilities and resources. 

In a brief tender call issued, the TNB said a tender briefing and site visit is to be organized on November 21, 2023. The last date to submit bids is December 8, 2023.

Under the country's energy roadmap NETR, TNB has also been tasked with developing 2.5 GW hybrid hydro-floating solar (HHFS) on its hydro dam reservoirs to ensure round-the-clock clean power supply and save on energy storage (see Malaysia's National Energy Transition Roadmap Part 1). 

The utility aims to realize 2.5 GW HHFS capacity along with 5×100 MW large-scale solar parks (LSSP), as part of its commitment to generate renewable energy from 3 GW by 2040 under NETR flagship projects. 

TNB stated in September 2023, "The HHFS project will be executed in four phases from 2023 to 2040, located at TNB hydro dam reservoirs. TNB Power Generation Sdn Bhd (TNB Genco) will lead the construction of a 230 MW capacity installation at the Temenggor and Chenderoh hydro plants as part of the 2.5 GW pipeline. The project targets completion by 2025." 

The utility says it is on track to achieve 8.3 GW renewable energy target by 2025, having already achieved 48% of this till the end of June 2023. 

Earlier this year, Malaysian state Sarawak owned utility Sarawak Energy was reported by Reuters to be planning a total of 400 MW floating solar PV capacity at its dams by 2030.
