  • Greece has allocated €238 million budget for its Photovoltaics on the Roof program
  • It provides subsidies for solar and storage systems to be installed by individuals and farmers
  • A maximum of 10.8 kW installed PV capacity and 10.8 kWh storage capacity stands to win subsidy

Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy has officially invited applications for its Photovoltaics on the Roof program offering €238 million budget for small scale solar and storage systems for households and farmers.

The budget is an increase from the previously announced €200 million for the program as part of the country's Recovery and Resilience Fund (RRF) (see Greece's Solar & Storage Funding Scheme).

According to the ministry, households will be able to access 45% to 75% of the total cost of their solar systems as subsidy, and for farmers it will be 40% to 60%. For a rooftop solar PV with storage system, the program will cover a subsidy amount of up to €16,000 for households and €10,000 for farmers.

People with disabilities, their spouses and dependent family members, single parents and families with at least 3 children will get an additional bonus of 10%.

Of the €238 million, €45 million is reserved for vulnerable households, €100 million for citizens within income of up to €20,000 and families with up to €40,000 income.

Battery subsidy for the above 2 categories is 100% while for the following 2 categories is 90%.

Another €63 million is for citizens with an annual income of over €20,000 and families with more than €40,000 income.

Professional farmers and special status famers get to win €30 million in subsidies.

Systems can be installed on the rooftop, including canopies, terraces, facades, shades and pergolas, on warehouses, parking areas or on the ground.

Maximum installed solar PV system capacity as well as for the battery system is 10.8 kW and 10.8 kWh, respectively.

Projects need to have a connection agreement with the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (DEDDIE), but not actually connected as yet.

"With the 'Photovoltaics on the Roof' program we are taking a decisive step towards energy democracy, as thousands of households and farmers will gain energy independence by producing and storing their own sustainable energy. It is our firm decision that the path to the green transition be done with Justice for all," said Energy Minister Kostas Skrekas.

Launched on May 2, 2023, the call will remain open to applications till the end of June 2024.
