  • Malaysia has launched a new solar tender for 2 GW AC capacity under its LSS program

  • It needs to be installed as onshore solar and water-based/floating PV projects

  • Winning projects will be required to start commercial operations in 2027

The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) in Malaysia has announced a new tender for 2 GW AC of solar under the country’s Large Scale Solar program.

Bids are invited for 2 packages. Package A is for onshore solar power plants with a capacity ranging between 30 MW AC to 500 MW AC, with a total quota of 1.5 GW AC.

Package B seeks floating or water-based solar power plants with a capacity ranging from 10 MW AC up to 500 MW AC, with a cap of a total of 500 MW AC. All selected solar power projects in this round will begin commercial operations in 2027.

The tender round was opened on January 20, 2025. It will be conducted by the country’s Energy Commission or Suruhanjaya Tenaga (ST).

ST calls it the LSS PETRA 5+ tender round which is an additional solar auction round. In April 2024, it had launched LSS5 tender round with 2 GW AC capacity to be submitted in 4 packages (see Malaysia Launches 5th Bidding Round For Large Scale Solar)

Solar PV is central to the country’s target of achieving a 70% renewable energy share in its power mix by 2050 under its energy roadmap (see Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap Part 1).
