  • A total of 6 grid-connected solar PV projects of 20 MW each are open for bidding in Namibia

  • Developers must deliver projects on a build-own-operate basis with full grid-connection responsibility, says NamPower

  • Project companies must include at least 39% Namibian ownership and 20% PDN participation

  • Bids are due January 30, 2026, with sites located near 6 identified substations

NamPower, the state-owned electricity utility of Namibia, has invited bids for a portfolio of 6 solar PV projects, representing a combined capacity of 120 MW.

The individual capacity of these projects will be 20 MW each, with the power generated to be procured on an independent power purchaser (IPP) basis, according to the utility.

According to the tender details, this procurement round will seek grid-connected solar PV projects delivered on a build-own-operate (BOO) basis by private developers. The 6 potential project sites, basis substations identified, are Karas, Hardap, Oshikoto, Otozondjupa, Kavango, and Zambezi.

On completion, the projects will be connected to NamPower’s transmission system, with the bidders being responsible for the grid connection. They will also be required to secure land within a 50 km radius of the eligible substations.

The tender conditions stipulate at least 39% Namibian shareholding in the project company, and that of Previously Disadvantaged Namibians (PDN) shall not be less than 20%.

Interested bidders can submit bids for a single lot or more, with each lot comprising a 20 MW solar project.

NamPower issued the call recently, with a bid submission deadline of January 30, 2026. Details of the tender are available on its website.

At the end of 2024, Namibia’s total installed solar PV capacity had reached 239 MW, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). According to UNDP Namibia, the country aims to achieve 70% renewable electricity generation in its total power mix by 2030 and reach full energy independence by 2040. By 2050, it aims for over 3.2 GW of solar and wind energy capacity.
