CEMIG Launches Call To Procure Solar & Wind Power Capacity Under Long Term PPAs in Brazil

Brazil's Companhia Energetica de Minas Gerais (CEMIG) has launched a new renewable energy tender, seeking to procure power from solar and wind generation projects, with delivery starting from January 1, 2026.

Projects with injected power less than or equal to 300 MW will be eligible to participate in the competition. CEMIG will purchase 100% electricity generated by the selected projects, for either 10 years which will be from January 2026 to December 2035, or 15 years meaning January 2026 to December 2040.

Power sourced will be supplied by CEMIG in the Southeast/Midwest, South and Northeast submarkets within the scope of the free contracting market or ACL.

Enterprises located in the North will be able to participate in the auction, provided they make the energy available in another submarket. Interested companies must have an installed capacity of at least 1 GW in the country.

The tender was launched on August 17, 2022 with October 3, 2022 the last date of bid submissions. Further details are available on CEMIG's website.

This tender follows the call CEMIG launched in April 2022 to source power supply from wind and solar power plants in the country, starting from January 1, 2025 (see Brazil's CEMIG Launches Wind & Solar Tender).

Meanwhile, Brazil has scrapped its planned A-6 auction due to lack of demand from distributors while continuing with A-5 auction that has solar as one of the participating technologies.

In the month of July 2022, Brazil added 708.78 MW new power generation capacity, according to the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) out of which 330.51 MW came from solar PV alone.
