The Department of Energy in the Philippines has launched the 1st round of the Green Energy Auction (GEA) for renewable energy with a total capacity of 2 GW for various power generating technologies, and solar's share fixed at 1.26 GW.
The entire 2 GW capacity needs to be developed as 1.4 GW in Luzon, 400 MW in Visayas and 200 MW in Mindanao regions. In these 3 regions, the department has sought 900 MW, 260 MW and 100 MW, respectively. Hydro power can contribute a total of 130 MW, biomass 230 MW, and wind energy 380 MW to the total.
Winning offers will be ranked from lowest to highest bid price.
The department issued the call through the Green Energy Auction Committee (GEAC) on January 18, 2022. Interested bidders need to register with the department by submitting a letter of intent, proof of authority, work program and proof of payment of registration and processing fee. Through GEA, the Philippines aims to accelerate the development of renewable energy, while encouraging private sector participation and investment in the energy sector to meet the country's growing demand for energy, including reserve requirements.
At the end of 2020, the country's cumulative installed solar power generation capacity reached 1,019.3 MW, according to the energy department's statistics, contributing to 7,653 MW renewable energy capacity.
