  • Serbia has invited applications for its 2nd renewable energy auction to award market premiums

  • A total of 424.8 MW of wind and solar energy capacity is available for interested companies

  • For wind energy, the bids are capped at €79/MWh while for solar it is set at €72/MWh

Serbia has announced the 2nd round of renewable energy auctions in the country to award market premiums for 300 MW wind and 124.8 MW solar power plant capacity through contracts for difference (CfD) scheme for 15 years.

A single company can win a maximum of 105 MW of solar PV capacity to ensure generators of solar energy with smaller projects can compete alongside larger renewable energy producers.

For wind energy projects, the winning bids are capped at €79/MWh, while for solar energy the maximum bid price will be admitted at €72/MWh, said the country’s Energy Minister Dubravka Đedović Handanović.

These caps are considerably lower than the previous round when the bids couldn’t go beyond €105/MWh for wind and €90/MWh for solar energy projects (see Serbia Concludes Renewable Energy Auction). This should promote competition and ensure lower prices for green energy availability in the country.

Winners will supply clean energy generated to the state utility Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS). However, the government will also admit projects that have a guaranteed supply contract with an end user for a period of 3 to 15 years.

Handanović explained, “This means that we additionally encourage those investments that will ensure that the energy produced from domestic, clean sources is used for the needs of our citizens and the economy, improving the energy security of our country.”

She added, “We expect SE to repeat the great interest of investors at these auctions and for the entire quota to be used, both for wind energy and for solar energy, and we hope for even more competitive and lower prices, because we expect great competition.”

Backed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), this tender is part of the country’s plans to support 1.3 GW renewable energy capacity with market premiums under a 3-year plan.

The Energy Ministry launched the call on November 27, 2024, details of which are available under Public Call Number 003307089 2024 on its website. Interested companies have time till February 5, 2025 to submit their applications.

At a recent event organized with the United Nations and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Serbia pledged that it aims to go 100% renewable energy powered by 2030. The country will add around 3.5 GW of new renewable energy capacity by the end of this decade, supported by public and private investments.
