South Africa's Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) has launched round 6 or window 6 of the country's Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) to procure power from 1 GW of solar PV and 1.6 GW of onshore wind energy.
"Given the energy challenges the country is facing the qualification criteria has been developed to promote the participation of projects that are fully developed and will be able to be constructed and connected to the national grid as soon as possible, but not later than 24 months post Commercial Close," specified the department.
It further added that this auction round covers the provision of and payment for ancillary services to support reliable and secure operation of the transmission system by the buyer, acting through its system operator, the department explained.
Issued on April 6, 2022, the last date of bid submission is August 11, 2022. Details of round 6 are available on the government's IPP Renewables website.
This tender capacity of 2.6 GW is part of the government's Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) 2019 through which it aims to procure power from 11.813 GW of renewable energy, storage, gas and coal.
In round 5 of the REIPPPP, South Africa awarded 2.583 GW of renewable energy capacity including 975 MW of solar PV with an average weighted bid of ZAR 0.42879 per kWh (see South Africa Concludes REIPPPP Round 5).
