  • Brazil has registered 93.859 GW of power generation capacity for the A-5 energy auction
  • For solar energy, 835 projects were registered with 32.254 GW capacity
  • Maximum tariff limit is BRL 639.00 per MWh, and for both solar and wind it is BRL 191.00 per MWh

Brazil’s National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) has said the country’s Energy Research Company (EPE) registered 93.859 GW of new power generation capacity from 1,694 projects for the upcoming A-5 New Energy Auction. It is scheduled to be held in the country on September 30, 2021.

Among participating technologies, nearly half or 835 solar projects have been registered for 32.254 GW capacity, with 690 wind energy projects representing 22.811 GW, and hydro power capacity of 1.118 GW through 71 projects, among others.

Maximum tariff accepted for the A-5 auction is capped at BRL 639.00 ($122.00) per MWh for energy recovery of urban solid waste. For both solar PV and wind energy technologies, the ceiling tariff is BRL 191.00 ($36.40) per MWh, for hydroelectric it is BRL 320.00 ($61.00) per MWh, for thermoelectric it is BRL 365.00 ($69.56) per MWh.

While the solar and wind power plants will be contracted for 15 years, hydroelectric will be contracted for 25 years and thermoelectric projects for 20 years. All selected facilities need to come online by January 1, 2026.

The bidding notice will be published on August 26, 2021, stated ANEEL. Auction proceedings will be broadcast live on the Electric Energy Commercialization Chamber (CCEE) portal.

A decree for the A-5 energy auction was published in the national gazette in May 2021, but the authorities reserved their decision on the fate of A-6 auction (see Brazil To Hold A-5 New Energy Auction On Sept 30, 2021).
