- Tindo Solar has announced plans to expand its current solar module production capacity to a GW-scale
- Once the new factory is online, targeted by mid-2025, it will be able to produce 7,000 solar panels/day
- Government support will be sought to implement the plan; Tindo’s current production capacity is 150 MW
Australia’s only solar panel manufacturer Tindo Solar is eyeing expansion with a GW-scale solar panel production factory in the country at an undisclosed location. Its current production capacity stands at 150 MW in Adelaide.
This state-of-the-art solar factory will be equipped to roll out 7,000 panels/day at full capacity, according to the company CEO Richard Petterson. He expects the new fab to be online by mid-2025 at a location in New South Wales or Queensland that’s closer to the ports.
“Tindo Solar envisions playing a pivotal role in meeting the considerable demand, contributing to the estimated 22,000 PV panels expected to be installed daily to achieve our decarbonization targets,” Petterson stated in a LinkedIn post.
Speaking to local renewable energy news portal RenewEconomy, Petterson said the expansion is likely to cost up to AUD 100 million, for which it will seek support of the federal government.
In March 2023, the Australian government had announced its AUD 15 billion National Reconstruction Fund (NRF) through which it plans to offer up to AUD 3 billion for renewables and low-emission technologies, including solar panels. It is considered Australia’s version of the Inflation Reduction Act of the US (see Australia’s Response To Inflation Reduction Act).
Additionally, the country announced an AUD 50 million plan in July 2023 to support initial studies for investment-ready projects for a clean energy supply chain, in the Indo-Pacific (see Australia To Diversity Clean Energy Supply Chain).
