Brazil Announces 3-Year New Energy Auction Schedule
  • Brazil has formally announced cancellation of A-4 and A-6 new energy auctions scheduled for 2020
  • Solar PV is one of the eligible technologies to participate in the auctions to be held annually in 2021, 2022 and 2023 as per the new timetable
  • In A-5 and A-6 auctions, solar PV among other participating technologies will be pitted against coal power plants

The Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) has issued ordinance to announce auction schedule to award power generation capacity in the country while cancelling both A-4 and A-6 auctions that were due to be held this year. The new auction schedule covers next 3-year period.

Earlier this year, the ministry citing COVID-19 indefinitely postponed A-4 and A-6 energy auctions promising that it doesn't mean cancelling the auctions this year (see COVID-19: Renewable Energy Auctions Face The Heat).

Following is the new auction timetable as issued by the country:

2021:   A-3 and A-4 auctions to be held in June 2021

A-5 and A-6 auctions to be held in September 2021

2022:   A-4 auction to be held in April 2022

A-6 auction to be held in September 2022

2023:  A-4 auction to be held in April 2023

A-6 auction to be held in September 2023

Solar PV, wind power, biomass thermoelectric, hydroelectric projects and existing project expansions are allowed to participate in A-3, A-4, A-5 and A-6 auctions. National coal thermoelectric projects can participate in A-5 and A-6 auctions, as per the ministry's ordinance.
