Brazil Pushes Back A-6 Auction To Oct 2019

• Brazil has delayed A-6 New Energy Auction to allow time for more project registration
• It was previously to be held on September 26, 2019, but the Ministry of Mines and Energy has pushed it back to October 17, 2019
• Deadline to register projects has also been increased from May 17, 2019 to June 12, 2019

The Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) has postponed its A-6 New Energy Auction by 1 months – from September to October 2019. First, the auction was planned to be held on September 26, 2019, but is now foreseen to be held on October 17, 2019.

The ministry announced the change allows more time to interested companies to register their projects. Now, they have time till June 12, 2019 to register their projects with the Energy Research Company (EPE).

Projects that win in the A-6 New Energy Auction need to come online by January 1, 2025; power purchase agreements (PPA) will be signed with the winners. For hydropower projects, the PPA will be valid for 20-years, while for wind and solar it will be 20 years. Other technologies such as thermoelectric biomass, coal and natural gas, combined cycle and expansion of existing natural gas projects will get 25-year power supply contracts.

The ministry had previously fixed May 17, 2019 as the date till when the projects could be registered. It's the first time solar is included in the list of participating technologies (see Solar Gains Entry In Brazil's A-6 Auction).
