Dubai-based renewable energy company AMEA Power has secured a long-term solar power purchase agreement (PPA) for its 120 MW Doornhoek Solar PV Project in South Africa with national utility Eskom. It says this marks the company's entry into the African nation's growing renewable energy market.

AMEA Power won the project under bid window 6 of South Africa's Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP). The entire project win of 860 MW was awarded to 5 solar PV projects including the Doornhoek plant (see South Africa: Disappointing 6th RE Round For Onshore Wind).

The company is developing the project as the majority shareholder in partnership with Ziyanda Energy and Dzimuzwo Energy which is wholly owned by African women.

Estimated to cost $120 million, the Doornhoek project will receive debt funding from the Standard Bank South Africa. The Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) will provide equity funding for the local partners.

The project is located near the Klerksdorp town in the North West province. On completion, it is expected to generate more than 325 GWh annually.

The Chairman of AMEA Power Hussain Al Nowais said, "As part of South Africa's long-term strategy to reduce carbon emissions and enhance energy stability, the Doornhoek Solar Project will play a pivotal role in the transition towards sustainable energy solutions. We are proud to be one of the first preferred bidders from Bid Window 6 to achieve this milestone."

Earlier this year in January 2024, AMEA Power forayed into Mozambique with its 125 MW project (see Africa Solar PV News Snippets).
