Switzerland-based electricity utility Axpo has entered a partnership with the German agricultural trading company Raiffeisen Waren-Zentrale Rhein-Main AG (RWZ) to develop solar parks in Germany.

The partnership offers ‘new economic opportunities’ for farmers, according to the partners that will provide them with ‘sustainable income options.’ No specific project or capacity details were shared.

“As state subsidies through the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) have decreased in recent years, we need a partner who has a strong market focus and can leverage alternative ways to market solar energy,” said RWZ Head of Corporate Development, Tim Papenfort.

He added, “As an established international project developer and electricity trader, Axpo brings valuable expertise, particularly in the construction of new facilities and the marketing of green power.”

For Axpo, this partnership is part of its renewable energy expansion plans with Germany being a key solar market. The company will be responsible for the development, construction and operation of solar PV parks.

RWZ says it will handle landowner outreach and associated contract negotiations. It will also participate as a ‘regional anchor shareholder’ in the projects to be developed by Axpo. Its customers will get ‘attractive lease terms’ and other opportunities for involvement.

The German company is a wholesaler and retailer of a wide range of products and services required by farmers, winemakers, horticulturists and foresters, it said. It also operates home and garden stores and is a supplier of heating and building materials.

“RWZ, as one of Germany’s leading agricultural traders, is exceptionally well connected in rural areas, complementing our expertise in the development, construction, and marketing of solar parks,” stated the Managing Director of Axpo’s solar activities in Germany, Martin Mitscher.
