Interest in perovskite solar cell technology is beginning to translate into commercial manufacturing plans in India, with leading module manufacturers Rayzon Solar and Navitas Solar unveiling separate plans to produce a combined 10 GW of perovskite-silicon tandem solar modules. 

US-based perovskite solar technology company Caelux Corporation will integrate its energy-producing solar glass with advanced TOPCon solar modules of both Indian manufacturers. Active Glass, a proprietary technology of Caelux, is built with perovskites. It replaces the conventional top glass in a module. When applied on top of solar modules, it creates an additional power-generating perovskite layer, converting conventional silicon solar modules into tandem solar modules. 

Caelux claims these Hybrid Tandem modules can generate up to 28% efficiency when combined with n-type TOPCon solar technology. 

Both Rayzon and Navitas have separately entered commercialization partnerships with Caelux for 5 GW capacity each. The five-year partnership will see the US firm supplying Active Glass to be integrated with TOPCon modules.

 “By combining our manufacturing expertise with Caelux’s pioneering perovskite technology, we are creating one of India’s earliest pathways for large-scale production of Hybrid Tandem solar modules,” said Navitas Solar Co-Founder and Director Ankit Singhania. 

Navitas Solar Co-Founder and CEO Vineet Mittal and COO Vijay Menon recently shared the company’s vision to become a fully integrated solar and energy solutions provider in an exclusive interview with TaiyangNews Managing Director Michael Schmela (see Navitas Solar Bets On Vertical Integration With Focus On Storage). 

While Rayzon will leverage its 11.3 GW large-scale bifacial manufacturing platform for this partnership, Navitas will use its vertically integrated multi-GW manufacturing platform for the same. The hybrid modules will meet eligibility requirements of the Government of India’s Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM).

Rayzon Solar CEO Amit Barve said, “This partnership accelerates our capability to domestically manufacture at the efficiency frontier and at the scale India needs to meet its ambitious clean energy goals of 500 GW by 2030.” The company is also building a 5.1 GW TOPCon solar cell manufacturing plant. 

Caelux says the companies are currently collaborating on early deployments, and commercial volumes are expected to be available by 2028 and eligible for India’s government-tendered utility market.
