Italy’s Comal has picked the Abruzzo region to locate its solar module factory
Once it is operational by 2025, the fab will have a maximum of 500 MW annual capacity
Located in the Province of L’Aquila, it will host the ‘most cutting-edge technologies’
Comal, an Italian solar EPC and O&M service provider, has zeroed in on an industrial site to locate its maiden solar module production factory that will mark its debut in the PV manufacturing domain.
The site in the Province of L’Aquila in Abruzzo can host a maximum of 500 MW annual production capacity. It is scheduled to become operational by 2025.
Modules produced at this factory will cater to the Italian retail market, including residential and industrial self-production systems, and energy communities. However, Comal has not specified the PV technology it plans to develop at the fab but said it will use the most cutting-edge technologies.
According to the management, the 500 MW fab will contribute to reducing the country’s energy dependence. Once fully operational, it will guarantee jobs and represent an ‘important’ piece of the PV value chain in Italy.
Comal has been producing and assembling trackers at its Montalto di Castro plant since 2018. It communicated its entry into PV manufacturing in January 2024 when it won the tender under the Italian government’s Next Apennino | Measure B1.2 – B3.3 B1.2 as part of the country’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) (see Italian EPC Company Venturing Into PV Manufacturing).
