China’s CSG Holding Announces Egyptian Solar Glass Factory

Chinese manufacturer plans RMB 1.75 billion investment to expand its manufacturing footprint

Key Takeaways
  • CSG Holding plans to build a 1,400-ton/day solar glass factory in Egypt, costing RMB 1.75 billion

  • The plant will feature 5 rolled glass lines and 4 tempered coating processing lines

  • CSG sees the investment as aligned with China’s Belt and Road strategy, while promoting its international expansion into solar glass production

Chinese solar glass manufacturer CSG Holding has secured clearance from its board for the development of a new glass production facility in Egypt with 1,400 tons/day capacity. The manufacturing facility is estimated to cost close to RMB 1.75 billion ($252 million).

The proposed factory will include a kiln with 5 lines of rolled glass and 4 supporting tempered coating processing production lines. Construction on site is expected to last 3 years and will begin once relevant government approvals are in place. CSG says it plans to execute the project via a new project company.

Egypt’s location at the crossroads of the Middle East and Africa offers geographical advantages and abundant resources, explains CSG Holding. Investment in the region also aligns with China’s Belt and Road Initiative and the “China–Egypt Community of Shared Future” vision.

For CSG, this investment supports its expansion strategy to ‘internationalize’ its business. As demand for solar grows across the globe, it will also contribute to the regional diversification of the PV industry, expanding it beyond China, which currently accounts for more than 85% of the world’s solar PV production capacity.

CSG is yet another solar glass manufacturer from China to announce production plans in Egypt. Earlier this year, Kibing Solar proposed a solar glass factory in the country with an annual production capacity of 1.53 million tons, and 1.08 million tons of high-purity silica sand (see Chinese Manufacturer To establish Solar Glass Factory In Egypt).

Previously, in November 2024, China Glass Holdings started construction of a RMB 2.23 billion glass factory in Egypt with a daily production capacity of 1,000 tons/day of float glass and 800 tons/day of ultra-clear PV glass. It is expected to start commercial operations by the end of 2025.

Solar glass producers are making a beeline to set up shop in Egypt following their compatriots in the polysilicon, cell, and module domains. In August this year, JA Solar was reported to have entered land use agreements along with its partners to establish an annual production capacity of 2 GW for solar cells and modules each and 1 GWh of energy storage systems (see Egypt Seals Deal For 2 GW Solar Manufacturing Hub).
