  • European Energy has secured a corporate solar offtaker for its Lidsø Solar Park in Denmark
  • DSB has agreed to procure 80 GWh out of 262 GWh the project is expected to generate annually
  • This will correspond to approximately 50% of DSB's current electricity consumption for light rail network in Copenhagen

Expected to be one among the largest solar parks in Denmark, being developed by European Energy, has secured an offtake contract from the Danish State Railways (DSB). This will ensure the construction of the park in Lolland Municipality.

DSB has agreed to purchase 80 GWh of clean energy from the solar park that's expected to generate a combined 262 GWh annually. This corresponds to around 50% of its current electricity consumption for light rail network in Copenhagen.

"We actively want to accelerate the green transition in Denmark, as we aim to reduce the climate impact of our operations by 98 percent by 2030 compared to 2019," said DSB's Head of Sustainability Aske Wieth-Knudsen. "With this agreement, we contribute to a faster transition to green electricity in Denmark, thereby strengthening the position of trains as one of the most climate-friendly modes of travel."

Under this contract, European Energy plans to start construction on the Lidsø Solar Park at Rødby Harbour after the summer holidays this year. It will be located on 253 hectares of land that has been leased from 3 landowners for 30 years. Project completion is due in 2025.

"In the entirety of Eastern Denmark, there is a shortage of renewable energy, luckily we see several municipalities, herein Lolland municipality, leading with the expansion of renewable capacity, especially with our future Power-to-X plans in the area," shared European Energy's Deputy CEO Jens-Peter Zink.

European Energy is already developing Kassø Power-to-X facility in Southern Denmark that it believes will become the world's largest commercial Power-to-X facility once operational. It will supply corporates, including Maersk, with e-methanol for transport and more sustainable plastic production. The project will be powered by 304 MW Kassø Solar Farm.

In June 2024, the Danish renewable energy company entered several long-term PPAs with Microsoft for a portfolio of wind and solar assets in Sweden and Denmark, covering 3.6 TWh over the contract period.
