Key Takeaways
  • Projects to combine DTEK’s delivery capacity with Octopus Energy’s AI-powered technology

  • DTEK’s YASNO to install solar and battery systems directly on customer sites

  • Octopus Energy’s Kraken to stabilize the grid, lower electricity costs, and protect customers against outages and price hikes

Ukraine's largest private energy company, DTEK, has joined forces with global clean energy technology firm Octopus Energy Group to launch Resilient Independent Solar Energy (RISE) – an initiative to deliver rooftop solar and battery storage systems to Ukrainian businesses and public sector institutions.

This partnership, announced at the Octopus Energy Tech Summit in London, brings together DTEK's on-the-ground operational expertise and Octopus’s AI-powered operating system Kraken, in a bid to strengthen the country's energy resilience.

RISE, the first-of-its-kind program launched in Ukraine, aims to raise €100 million to fund 100 on-site energy projects within 3 years. This will help stabilize the grid, bring down customer electricity bills, and shield them from blackouts and sudden price hikes.

Expressing gratitude over this development, DTEK CEO, Maxim Timchenko, said, “About 70% of Ukraine’s thermal generation capacity has been damaged, destroyed or seized since the full-scale invasion. This has created not only an urgent need to rebuild but also an opportunity to accelerate the shift to a decentralised, renewable energy system. This partnership with Octopus Energy combines the strength of two national energy champions and is a step towards that future. By combining investment, technology and international support, we can help Ukrainian businesses and communities take control of their energy needs and lay the foundation for lasting energy independence. We are especially grateful to the UK Government and British people for their unwavering support for Ukraine.”

D.Solutions, DTEK’s business specializing in consumer energy supply and energy efficiency services under its retail brand YASNO, will install solar and battery systems directly on customer sites. Each system will run on the Kraken operating system, giving businesses real-time control over energy usage, reducing consumption during peak hours, and selling surplus electricity back to the grid – all of which ultimately lead to greater resilience and savings.

Expressing optimism over this partnership, Founder and CEO of Octopus Energy Group, Greg Jackson, said: “Ukraine – and specifically DTEK – has demonstrated incredible resilience and agility in the face of unprecedented destruction to its energy system. They are rebuilding at pace and pioneering a decentralised, smart energy system powered by homegrown renewables – and this is exactly where Kraken can be highly effective. We’re proud to partner with them to help Ukraine come back stronger than ever.”

Ukraine's commercial and industrial (C&I) behind-the-meter (BTM) segment remains largely untapped, with annual potential estimated at 300 MW and a value of nearly €200 million. YASNO, already supplying over 60,000 C&I customers, feels it can generate a project pipeline worth roughly €30 million a year in this space.
