Ukraine's largest private energy company DTEK Group has energized wind and solar power plants in Romania with a combined 113 MW capacity. It says this marks the beginning of the execution of its renewable energy strategy of achieving 5 GW installed capacity in the European Union (EU) by 2030.

DTEK says these are the 1st projects for the group outside Ukraine in its EU portfolio that will span Italy, Poland and Croatia. Both were commissioned through its Netherlands-based subsidiary DTEK Renewables International (DRI).

The 53 MW solar PV Project Glodeni is located in Romania's Mureș County. It had been under construction since March 2023. Romanian electricity transmission system operator Transelectrica accepted the first power from this facility on January 5, 2024.

Built for a €43 million investment, the solar farm uses Risen Energy solar modules and Ideematec trackers.

The 60 MW wind farm Project Ruginoasa is located in Lasi County and was built for €107 million, the company shared. Both these projects will produce close to 225,000 MWh annually.

"Ukrainians have made a clear choice that their future lies inside Europe, and DTEK's expansion into the EU is living proof of that ambition," said DTEK CEO Maxim Timchenko. "This moment marks is a further step forward in the integration of Europe's and Ukraine's energy systems as Ukraine moves towards EU accession."

DTEK also stressed that DRI's expansion will allow Ukraine to draw on European expertise, and potentially to import green Romanian power into Ukraine.

The group says it is the largest producer of renewable energy in Ukraine with 1.1 GW of installed capacity.
