French energy utility Engie has commissioned a 181.25 MW AC solar power plant in Chile, calling it the company's largest renewable energy park in the country, for which it is now also building a 638 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS).
Coya Solar Plant in the commune of María Elena, Antofagasta secured the commercial operation declaration (COD) from the National Electrical Coordinator to grid connect it to the National Electric System (SEN).
It is equipped with 369,432 bifacial solar modules that are to be cleaned by robotic cleaning technology as part of the company's plans to add 'innovations' to the site along with the BESS.
"Obtaining the COD for our Coya Solar Plant closes the first stage of our transformation plan, with solar and wind plants that already add around 800 MW of renewable energy to the system," said Engie Chile CEO Rosaline Corinthien. "Now begins a second stage that consists of adding new technologies to the development of projects, such as storage systems."
Engie Chile already operates 114 MW Tamaya and 88 MW Capricornio solar plants in the country. Recently it announced plans to invest $1.8 billion in the country's renewable energy sector over next 3 years as it targets to install 2 GW capacity and exit coal here by 2025 (see France's Engie To Exit From Coal In Chile By 2025).
