European Energy has secured €234 million in financing for its 225 MW Vizzini project in Italy
The 225 MW plant is being built as an agrivoltaic facility to enable continued agricultural activity on site
The project is backed by Italy’s FER X support scheme and is expected to be operational in 2027, says the developer
European Energy, the Denmark-based renewable energy developer, has secured €234 million in project financing for its 225 MW Vizzini agrivoltaic project in Italy. On completion, it says the facility will be among the largest agrivoltaic projects in the country.
When European Energy began construction of the Vizzini project in May 2026, it said the 225 MW plant was expected to become Italy’s largest agrivoltaic plant on completion (see European Energy Launches Italy’s ‘Largest’ Agrivoltaic Facility).
The Danish company says that the Vizzini project is among the first projects of its kind in Italy to secure financing at this scale. European Energy is the sponsor of the projects and reached financial close on behalf of Sun Project as the borrower.
Crédit Agricole CIB, Intesa Sanpaolo (IMI CIB Division), NORD/LB, and Société Générale provided project financing for the Sicily project.
Solar panels for this project will be installed about 1.3 m above the ground, allowing livestock to graze beneath them. Around 820 sheep are expected to graze across the site, which is spread across 260 hectares.
The facility is expected to generate about 405 GWh of electricity annually once it is commissioned in 2028. The project covers 260 hectares, including 90 hectares allocated to reforestation, while additional land will be used for mitigation measures and maintained in natural conditions.
Vizzini is supported under Italy’s FER X Transitional Contract for Difference auction scheme for 20 years.
“Vizzini demonstrates that agrivoltaics can move beyond development into large-scale construction and financing. The combination of contracted revenues, secured grid connection and a robust technical and agricultural design has enabled us to establish a bankable structure for a particularly complex renewable energy project,” said European Energy’s Country Manager of Italy, Filippo Ricci. “That is important not only for Vizzini, but also for the development of the agrivoltaic market in Italy.”
