  • Facebook has entered a VPPA with Sunseap for a 5 MW offshore floating solar power plant
  • Power generated by the 5 MW project will be grid connected and Facebook will get RECs from it
  • Facebook will use the same to support its Singapore operations including its 1st custom-built data centre in Asia

Social media giant Facebook will procure solar power generated by a 5 MW offshore floating solar PV project in the Straits of Johor, under a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) it has signed with Sunseap Group. The 5 MW project was commissioned by Shell backed Sunseap in March 2021 as one of the world's largest offshore floating solar farm on sea water (see 5 MW Offshore Floating PV Farm Online).

Power procured under a VPPA will come from the national grid, and all renewable energy credits (REC) from the same will be transferred to Facebook as per terms of the agreement. Sunseap said this will support Facebook's Singapore operations, including the latter's 1st custom-built data centre in Asia.

"We are thankful for this partnership with Sunseap that is helping us bring new solar energy to the Singapore grid in support of our operations in the area," said Facebook's Head of Renewable Energy, Urvi Parekh. "This is our first floating solar project, so we're particularly excited to support an innovative technology that will help bring more renewable energy projects online."

This VPPA is the 2nd such arrangement entered between Sunseap and Facebook as previously they signed an agreement for 100 MW rooftop solar power in Singapore in October 2020 (see 100 MW Solar Power For FB Datacenter In Singapore).
