The American fast-food company Burger King has announced a new long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) to procure 1,500 GWh of solar energy from Iberdrola Spain for the restaurant chain's Spanish operations.

Iberdrola will honor the deal with solar energy from 75 MW out of the 553 MW AC/590 MW DC Francisco Pizarro PV Plant in Cáceres. This capacity will cover the annual demand of more than 750 restaurants, it said.

Burger King sees this deal as enabling it to accelerate its decarbonization efforts and increase energy security. It plans to seek new opportunities with Iberdrola to promote the use of clean energy to create a more energy-efficient business model.

"This is an initiative that adds to our commitment to the use of green energy, so that our business model is even more energy efficient," said the CEO of Restaurant Brands Iberia, Luis Hérault. This company manages the Burger King master franchise in Spain and Portugal.

Burger King is now another addition to the list of corporate customers as offtakers from the Francisco Pizarro PV plant. Offtakers include French multinational food company Danone, German pharmaceutical producer Bayer, and US food and beverages firm PepsiCo.

Touted as the largest PV development in Europe back in August 2022 when it was commissioned, Iberdrola built it for €300 million (see Iberdrola Puts 590 MW Francisco Pizarro Project Into Operation).
