Israel's Lusix says it has become the world's 1st producer of lab-grown diamonds (LGD) that are fully powered by solar energy, thanks to a dedicated 30 MW solar farm. It plans to sell the products under the commercial name of Sun Grown Diamonds.
Lusix said the solar farm in Southern Israel supplies electricity for the entire company, including all of its diamond growing operations, however does not share more details about the PV project. The company said the Sun Grown Diamonds are now certified to be 100% solar powered.
Making LGD is an energy intensive process and Lusix says that the use of solar power brings down its emissions.
"Being the first company to power its entire diamond growing operation with solar energy, we are setting new sustainability standards – and are making a very powerful statement: lab-grown diamonds of even the very highest quality can be produced sustainably, meeting an ever-increasing consumer desire for luxury goods that are thrilling to own and sustainably created," said Lusix Chairman and Founder Benny Landa.
The news comes just days after Lusix announced completing an investment round of $90 million with investors including LVMH Luxury Ventures. Lusix had then said it will use this investment to fuel its growth, and expand it Israel production capacity with a 2nd 100% solar-powered-state-of-the-art facility scheduled to come online this summer.
