EDP Renewables has secured Microsoft as the offtaker for its 200 MW solar project in Singapore
Microsoft will purchase 100% renewable energy exported to the national grid
It entails this capacity to come up on public housing and government-owned buildings
Global technology group Microsoft has officially become the 100% corporate offtaker of solar power from the SolarNova 8 project of EDP Renewables that the latter terms as the largest solar project in Singapore.
Under the long-term contract signed for a period of 20 years, Microsoft will purchase all the renewable energy exported to the grid from the EDP project which will see solar panels coming up on more than 1,000 Singapore public housing and over 100 government-owned buildings.
EDP said this win under phase 8 of the SolarNova program makes it the largest initiative under Singapore’s SolarNova program that’s targeted to help the country’s 2 GW solar target by 2030 (see Singapore Aiming For 2 GW Solar PV Capacity By 2030).
It won this capacity in February 2024 under a competitive process of Singapore’s Housing and Development Board (HDB) and Economic Development Board (EDB).
For Microsoft, this is part of its endeavor to achieve 100% renewable energy for its electricity consumption by 2030. The Singapore agreement is 2nd for Microsoft and EDP as they previously partnered for a 60 MW rooftop solar portfolio in 2018 through EDP-backed Sunseap (see EDPR Now Owns 91% Stake In Sunseap).
