  • Iberdrola subsidiary Neoenergia has launched the group’s 1st renewable energy hybrid complex in Brazil
  • The 600 MW facility comprises 15 wind farms with 471.2 MW and 2 solar projects with 149.2 MW capacity
  • Iberdrola says by 2025, it will invest BRL 30 billion to develop new renewable energy, network and green technology projects in Brazil

Neoenergia has inaugurated Spanish energy group Iberdrola’s 1st hybrid renewable energy power plant in Brazil with 600 MW wind and solar capacity as the group President Ignacio Galán promised to invest BRL 30 billion ($5.7 billion) to develop new renewable energy, network and associated green technology projects in in the Latin American nation.

The Neoenergia Renewable Complex is located in the municipalities of Santa Luiza, Areia de Baraúnas, São Jose de Sabugi and São Mamede, in the state of Paraíba on 8,700 hectares of land of which 14% is occupied, according to Iberdrola.

The complex comprises Luzia solar power plants with 149.2 MW combined installed capacity, and Chafariz wind complex comprising 15 wind parks having 136 wind turbines representing a total of 471.2 MW capacity. Iberdrola said the connection to the network is guaranteed by the substation and the transmission line, with an extension of 345 kms.

Neoenergia built the complex with €630 million investment. It will supply clean energy to 1.3 million homes. Currently the Iberdrola subsidiary has 5.1 GW installed power generation capacity of which it says 90% is renewable thanks to the new hybrid complex.

“With the Neoenergia Renewable Complex, we reached 90% of the installed capacity in clean energy. We are prepared to serve Brazilians with reliability and security, bearing in mind the growing demand of the free market,” said CEO of Neoenergia, Eduardo Capelastegui.

While this is the 1st renewable energy complex for Iberdrola in Brazil, the company has also picked the country to build its 1st ever floating solar power plant, on Xaréu Dam (see Iberdrola Plans 630kW Floating Solar Project In Brazil).
