Sono Motors has ceased operations and entered insolvency proceedings after failing to secure long-term financing
The company is offering its Sono Solar brand, IP, and solar vehicle technologies for sale
The management said it hopes a buyer will continue developing and commercializing the company's solar mobility technologies
Sono Motors GmbH, the German solar mobility solutions company, has ceased its operational business effective July 31, 2026. It has initiated insolvency proceedings after failing to secure sustainable financing during a restructuring process.
The restructuring followed the withdrawal of its primary investor, Sono Group N.V., from the company's solar division in March 2026. According to Sono Motors, despite extensive discussions with potential investors, it was unable to secure the funding needed to continue operations.
As a result, the company is offering its Sono Solar brand and its B2B solar technology operations for sale. The business has focused on supplying solar technology to vehicle manufacturers and commercial fleets since 2024.
Sono Motors Managing Directors Denis Azhar and Jan Schiermeister said their immediate priority is to divest the company's core technology portfolio.
The assets available for acquisition include intellectual property (IP), hardware components, and technical documentation. The portfolio includes the proprietary solar integration system developed for the Sion vehicle, power electronics such as solar charge controllers for electric vehicles (EVs), and solar data services.
“The fact that we were ultimately unable to secure financing is a bitter disappointment after pushing investor negotiations forward so intensively until the very end,” said Azhar. “Our focus now lies on finding buyers who take forward our market-ready products, recognize and acquire the technological potential of Sono Solar or parts of our business, and continue to bring it to industrial application and scale it.”
Schiermeister added, “We genuinely hope that this collective work will find a continuation in the market through an acquisition of the technology. We remain convinced that solar will be an integral part of vehicles in the future.”
Earlier in February 2023, the company had announced plans to scrap production plans for its solar electric passenger car owing to the resource-intensive nature of the business, instead focusing on retrofitting and integrating its solar technology for third-party vehicles (see Sono Scraps Plans For Solar Electric Car Sion For Good).
