Tongwei has announced a module supply order for a utility-scale project in Saudi Arabia
It will deliver 1.175 GW of its TNC-G12R 66 high-efficiency solar PV modules
Initial shipment is planned to be delivered in 2025 while the project will come online in 2027
Chinese vertically integrated solar PV manufacturing company Tongwei Group has bagged a contract to supply its solar modules to ACWA Power of Saudi Arabia for the latter’s Muwayh Solar PV Project in the Middle Eastern nation.
Tongwei will provide 1.175 GW of its TNC-G12R 66 high-efficiency solar PV modules under the agreement reached. The initial batch is expected to be shipped in 2025. It forms phase IV of the PV project backed by the Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia.
The Muwayh project is a 2 GW PV plant coming up in the Makkah Province on about a 46 km² area, adjacent to the Mahazat-Al-Sayd Reserve. It will be connected to the main grid through a Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) substation with a 25-year operational phase. It is expected to start commercial operations in 2027. Tongwei said its modules will help produce an estimated 1.63 billion kWh of clean electricity annually.
ACWA Power is partnering with the country’s Water and Electricity Holding Company (Badeel) and Saudi Aramco Power Company (SAPCO) for the Muwayh project, along with the 2 GW Haden and the 1.5 GW Al Khushaybi plants.
Tongwei and ACWA Power signed a supply agreement for the Muwayh project at the June 2024 SNEC event.
More large-scale solar PV projects are coming up in Saudi Arabia as the country explores space for 20 GW of wind and solar capacity to tender annually. Recently, the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) opened a tender for 4.5 GW of solar PV and wind energy capacity under round 6 of the National Renewable Energy Program (NREP) (see Saudi Arabia Launches Call For NREP Round 6 With 4.5 GW Capacity).
