Key Takeaways
  • Vikram Solar expects its 9 GW TOPCon cell plant in Tamil Nadu to produce its first cells in December 2026

  • The company plans to increase cell manufacturing capacity to 12 GW in a later phase

  • An ingot and wafer facility is also planned at Gangaikondan, with commissioning targeted for FY2029

Indian solar manufacturer Vikram Solar expects to produce its first n-type TOPCon solar cells at its Gangaikondan facility in Tamil Nadu in December 2026. The 9 GW plant, located in Tirunelveli district, will be commissioned in phases. It is being developed by VSL Green Power Private Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Vikram Solar.

The company says the cells produced at this plant will mainly be used in its own modules. At full capacity, the plant is expected to meet most of the company's cell requirements, which are currently dependent on imports. The company says its locally manufactured cells will support modules for utility-scale and rooftop projects, including the PM Surya Ghar and PM-KUSUM programs where domestic content requirements apply. It also intends to seek ALMM List-II enlistment for these cells (see India To Impose ALMM For Solar Cells From June 1, 2026).

The site already houses Vikram Solar's 6 GW module plant, which was inaugurated in August 2026. Earlier, in July, the company rolled out its first Hypersol n-type TOPCon G12R modules from the facility. These modules offer power ratings of 615 W to 640 W and efficiencies of up to 23.69% (see Vikram Solar Commissions New Tamil Nadu Module Plant).

Gyanesh Chaudhary, Chairman and Managing Director of Vikram Solar, said, “Indian module makers, including us, have built their businesses around imported cells. Gangaikondan ends that for Vikram Solar.” He added that the company's manufacturing roadmap covers everything from wafers to modules.

Vikram Solar plans to increase cell production capacity to 12 GW and has received board approval for a 9 GW ingot and wafer manufacturing facility, targeted for FY2029. The existing module plant, upcoming cell facility, and planned ingot and wafer operations are all part of the nearly 200-acre integrated campus at Gangaikondan. The project is expected to create more than 2,000 direct and indirect jobs.
