US headquartered hyperscale data center campus provider data center solutions provider Vantage Data Centers will procure solar power from 87 MW capacity from SolarAfrica for the local grid supplying power to its Johannesburg data center campus.
The 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) will support the production of 87 MW solar capacity for SolarAfrica's De Aar Solar Project in Northern Cape.
Vantage said the agreement will enable it to supplement the local grid with solar power aligned with its commitment to achieve net zero emissions globally by 2030. The JNB1 campus is scheduled to open in July 2022 and will have 80 MW of IT capacity, of which up to 33% will be supported by solar power.
"The rollout of the 87 MWp solar farm for Vantage's campus, which will be one of the largest in South Africa, is an exciting step for us as we gear up to help even more businesses save with cheaper, cleaner energy through wheeling," said SolarAfrica Director Charl Alheit.
In another news from Northern Cape, South Africa, Norway's Scatec recently secured PPAs for 3 Kenhardt projects under the government's Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (RMIPPPP). It will provide 150 MW of dispatchable renewable energy from 5.00 am to 9.30 pm from a 540 MW hybrid installation of solar PV and 1.1 GWh of battery storage.
