  • US EPA has launched a funding call for $7 billion under IRA backed Solar for All initiative
  • It aims to expand the reach of solar to low-income households and disadvantaged communities
  • The funding opportunity is open to states, territories, tribal governments, municipalities and non-profits

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), under the Inflation Reduction Act's (IRA) $27 billion Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (GGRF), is offering $7 billion in grants under a Solar for All funding opportunity to help expand the reach of solar among low-income households and disadvantaged communities.

The amount is to be disbursed in the form of up to 60 grants to states, territories, tribal governments, municipalities and non-profits under the 3 award categories of state and territory programs, American Indian and Alaska Native Programs, and multi-state programs. Awards will be available in the range of $25 million to $400 million.

According to the EPA, Solar for All programs ensure equitable access to residential rooftop and residential community solar power to low-income households. Additionally, these also guarantee such households to benefit from distributed solar in terms of household savings, community ownership, energy resilience, and the like.

"At a time when people are struggling to make ends meet, all while dealing with the existential threat of climate change, we must make residential rooftop solar a reality for low-income and working families that need it most," said Independent Senator Bernie Sanders who according to the EPA championed the program.

Interested applicants have time till September 26, 2023 to apply for grants under the competition. Details are available here.

EPA says to exhaust $27 billion GGRF funds, it will soon launch a $14 million National Clean Investment Fund (NCIF) to expand clean technology deployment at a national scale, and another $6 billion Clean Communities Investment Accelerator (CCIA) to build clean financing capacity through community lenders.
