  • Driven by growing customer demand for solar in the US, Shoals is expanding its manufacturing capacity
  • It is relocating to a larger facility with 638,000 sq. ft. space within Portland, Tennessee
  • Shoals did not specify the capacity expansion in volumes; at the end of Q3/2023, it had 35 GW capacity across its 2 US locations

Shoals Technologies Group is moving to a new, larger location in Portland, Tennessee as it sets to expand its existing manufacturing and distribution operations over the next 5 years.

The US-based electrical balance of systems (BOS) supplier will invest $80 million to relocate its manufacturing operations. It will move to a 638,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility at 1500 Shoals Way.

At the end of Q3/2023, Shoals had a cumulative operational manufacturing capacity of 35 GW with the ramp-up of its 3rd Tennessee fab. Back then, it said its capacity can be expanded to 42 GW to serve the growing demand well into 2025.

The management did not specify the capacity expansion in specific volumes with the relocation.

Shoals offers EBOS solutions for solar, storage and electric vehicle charging infrastructure. However, it is undertaking expansion citing demand for solar in the country. It provides big lead assembly, combiner boxes, balance of systems, transition box, among other components to the solar industry.

With the addition of some 550 new jobs in Sumner County, Shoals says it will have a total headcount of approximately 1,400 in the region.

"The additional staff and larger facility will enable Shoals to better meet its growing customer demand for solar power," it stated. Shoals also operates a manufacturing facility at Muscle Shoals in Alabama.
